£17 million invested in NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centres

Published: 13 February 2017

Public Health and Innovation Minister, Nicola Blackwood has today announced a £17 million investment into three NIHR Patient Safety Translational Research Centres (PSTRCs).

The funding will be split between Imperial College NHS Trust and Imperial College London (over £7 million), Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and University of Manchester (over £6 million) and Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University of Leeds (£3 million), to fund the two existing PSTRCs in London and Manchester and a new PSTRC in Yorkshire.

The investment will be spent on patient safety research with the centres aiming to turn patient safety discoveries into practice, with previous research undertaken in Manchester and London already having an impact on NHS frontline services.

Public Health and Innovation Minister, Nicola Blackwood said:

“The UK is home to some of the best research minds in the world. This Government is committed to supporting them to improve the lives of people across the country.

“We want every patient to receive the best and safest NHS care possible. Investing today in research to improve patient safety and tackle the challenges of tomorrow is essential. London, Manchester and Leeds are at the heart of cutting edge health research and our investments through the NIHR will enable our researchers to maintain their position of global excellence.”
